Side Stepping

HOW TO DO IT

Walking sideways, stepping one foot out and bringing the other foot to meet it. Trains the hip muscles used to step around obstacles in the home.

Verbal Cues

  • “Feet hip-width apart to start”
  • “Step out to the side, then bring the other foot to meet it”
  • “Stand tall, don’t lean over the moving leg”

What to Watch For

  • Trunk stays upright
  • Steps are even on both sides

Safety

Make sure the floor is clear. The client should have their hands hovering over the bench as they side step.
