Walking sideways, stepping one foot out and bringing the other foot to meet it. Trains the hip muscles used to step around obstacles in the home.
Verbal Cues
- “Feet hip-width apart to start”
- “Step out to the side, then bring the other foot to meet it”
- “Stand tall, don’t lean over the moving leg”
What to Watch For
- Trunk stays upright
- Steps are even on both sides
Safety
Make sure the floor is clear. The client should have their hands hovering over the bench as they side step.
